Essbare Gemeinde - Edible Community

‘Edible city,’ ‘edible community,’ and ‘edible district’ are flexible terms that refer to similar concepts on varying scales. All approaches emphasize the planting of edible plants in (semi) public spaces. Community gardens, freely accessible raised beds, fruit trees in parks, and berry bushes in children's playgrounds are just a few possible elements.

Edible communities also include more individual actions. Citizens are often asked to use private spaces such as window sills, balconies, courtyards, and facades to grow fruit and vegetables.

Famous examples of edible cities include Todmorden in England and Andernach in Germany. In Austria, the edible village Übelbach and the Precious Landscapes (Kostbare Landschaften) Project in Ottensheim are among the first edible municipalities.
