How it all began and how we want to continue now

Mail from Anzhelika and Mykola from the community garden Zalizna Woda in L'viv/Lviv, Ukraine

The team's joint "adventure" began last year with the dream of creating a public space for gardening in Lviv. The activists were immediately very lucky: a few stops away from the central city square there was a plot of land of one hectare. In the 20th century it housed a municipal nursery of ornamental plants, greenhouses, founded by the famous gardener Arnold Röhring. However, about 15-20 years ago the nursery ceased to operate and the site became overgrown with shrubs, turned into an illegal landfill and greenhouses became ruins.

The first year of co-creation was exciting: more than two dozen events were organized (cleaning events, workshops, meetings, infrastructure development), in which more than 350 people participated. Currently, there are already 15 beds of various sizes, 2 trellises for grapes, a composter (by the way, David and Cordula from Gartenpolylog participated in its creation) and bike racks.

The team felt that a challenge worse than the COVID-19 pandemic was not likely. But in early 2022, Russia's all-out war against Ukraine scuttled all plans. Most activists volunteered and sought humanitarian aid for other Ukrainian cities. The humanitarian crisis also hit Lviv: in less than a month, more than 200,000 people arrived in the city from other regions of Ukraine. Since the beginning of spring, the Community Garden has been working primarily for these people. We want the IDPs to feel safe here, find like-minded people, get distracted and learn something new.

But in order for everyone* to have the opportunity to participate in thematic activities related to gardening, garden therapy, organic food growing, Nature-Based-Solutions, recreation and reflection, we need your support. Together we initiated crowdfunding campaign to purchase the necessary gardening tools and complete the furnishing of the event space. The requested amount is 2 500.- Euro.

We will be grateful to all philanthropists for their help.

Funds can be transferred via PayPal to the account mykola.riabyka@gmail.com (this is the account of one of the coordinators of the space).
